Tips to Find an Employee Lawyer

Workplaces are rife with injustices. Wrongful termination, sexual harassment, wage issues, and denial of medical leave are only some issues that employees face. Wrongful termination alone can have several reasons such as discrimination related to race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. When you need to take legal action for injustices in the workplace, you will need to hire an employee attorney to handle it. Here’s how to find one.

Search Online

It is important to hire a local employee lawyer. Employment law differs from state to state in many aspects. So, you will need to ensure that you hire a lawyer with experience in handling employment-related cases in your town or city.

Online searches are best to find local businesses. You can use your location and requirement in the search keyword to find the names of law firms in your city. For instance, an employee lawyer in Los Angeles ( www.akopyanlaw/employment-law ) will bring names of leading law firms in the city.

Check Profiles

Click on the website links (one by one) on the search page to read about lawyers’ education, experience, and expertise in employment law. Some law firms deal with only a few components of the employment law. So, you will need to ensure that the lawyer you like and wish to hire actually handles cases similar to your own.

Check the lawyers’ experience in handling cases related to your own category of employment law ( https://www.akopyanlaw.com/attorneys/ ). When it comes to cases of sexual harassment in the workplace or wrongful termination, things can take an ugly turn at the negotiation stage. Your employer can even refuse to pay the compensation and you may need to drag the case to trial. Lack of evidence on your part can also derail your case. So, you will need an expert and experienced lawyer to represent you.

Based on these criteria, choose a few lawyers to discuss your case with them.

Consult

Schedule consulting sessions with a lawyer (free for prospective clients) to discuss the merits (or the lack thereof) of your case. Your situation will need to be viable for a lawsuit and only a lawyer can tell if this is the case. Once you present the details of the case, the lawyer can let you know if it is possible to file a lawsuit for it. They can also inform you if they are available to take your case.

Use these consulting sessions to also inquire about the lawyers’ fees. Feel free to clarify any doubts you may have about the lawsuit at this time.

Review and Hire

Now, review the information you have collected so far. Consider each lawyer’s expertise, experience, fee, and reputation to help derive at a decision. Also, consider the lawyer’s personality and your equation with each before you hire one. If you are not comfortable with your lawyer then it is no use hiring him or her.

Once you are sure of your decision, hire the lawyer without delay.

It was really helpful when you said to look at their experience. My sister was telling me a couple of weeks ago about how she can't get medical leave from her work since she has been really sick lately, and she wants to make sure that she can find the right attorney to help her with her case. I'll make sure to pass this information along to her so that she can know what to look for when searching for an attorney.

Thank you for advising us to read up on the profiles of employment lawyers prior to hiring them as in doing so, we will have a clearer idea of their background and experience. While I was having dinner with my brother two nights ago, he mentioned that he got terminated abruptly without any prior notice. I will ask my brother to consult with an employment lawyer to have a better idea of his situation, as well as to know what is he entitled to.
